The Board of Directors of the Federation of Publishers Guilds of Spain (FGEE) has recognized the writer from Zaragoza Soledad Puertolas with the Liber 2022 Award to the “most prominent” Hispanic American author.
With this award, the FGEE honors “the strong commitment of Puértolas literature with social values and its constant defense of books, reading and intellectual property”.
Born in Zaragoza in 1947, Puértolas has a degree in journalism and a Master’s degree in Spanish and Portuguese Language and Literature from the University of California at Santa Bárbara. Her literary production covers the field of the novel, the short story and the essay, and she has written more than 40 books. Since 2010, she has held the ‘g’ chair at the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language.
His literary work and his career in the cultural sector have been recognized with numerous awards, among which are the Aragonese Letters Prize in 2003, the Culture Prize (Literature section) of the Community of Madrid in 2008, the Gold medal of the city of Zaragoza, the José Antonio Labordeta Prize for Literature in 2019 and, in 2021, the Owl Award of the Friends of the Book and the Averroes Award. In addition, his books have been translated into several languages.
His works include the novel ‘El bandit doubly armed’ (Sesame Prize 1979), ‘Queda la noche’ (Planeta Prize 1989), ‘Cielo noche’ (2008), ‘Mi amor en vain’ (2012) and ‘Música de Opera’ (2019); Among his storybooks are ‘Goodbye to the girlfriends’ (NH 2000 Award), ‘Compañeras de viaje’, ‘El fin’, ‘Boys and girls’ and, more recently, ‘Cuarteto’ (2021).
He has also published the volumes of autobiographical texts ‘Memories of another person’, ‘Imagen of Navarra’ and ‘With my mother’; and, within the genre of the essay, the work ‘The hidden life’ (Anagram Award 1993), ‘Nostalgia for others’ (publication of the University of Valladolid) and ‘Lúcida Melancolía’ (Baroja and I Collection). He has also written stories for young audiences (‘The shadow of a night’, ‘The tour of the animals’, ‘The attic of the big house’ and ‘The garden of Ulises’) and has made a version of La Celestina current Spanish.
The presentation of this award will take place on October 6 at the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC), within the framework of the Liber 2022 activities. In its 40th edition, Liber will bring together more than 350 publishers and companies from a dozen countries in Barcelona and expects the attendance of 7,000 professionals at a fair that will take place from October 5 to 7 . This year, Colombia will be the country guest of honor.
