Bengaluru customs officers have caught a passenger who tried to smuggle gold items price Rs. 69.40 lakh by hiding in slippers at Bengaluru airport.

Customs officers at the moment are further cautious whereas scanning slippers as smugglers conceal gold strips on slippers to keep away from detection.

"The passengers reached Bengaluru from Bangkok on a IndiGo Airways flight have been stopped for checking. A complete of 4 items embedded within the false cavity of slippers have been seized from them," stated a customs official on Wednesday.

A minimum of 1.2 kg having purity of 24 karat valued at Rs. 69.40 lakh was seized.

On March 12, a passenger who arrived from Bangkok to Bengaluru by IndiGo flight 6E 76, was intercepted by Bengaluru Customs Air Intelligence Officers. On asking the aim of journey, the passenger informed that he was travelling for medical function.

Nevertheless, the passenger was unable to supply any legitimate medical paperwork which made the officers suspicious.

Accordingly the passenger was put via thorough checks. On physique test and scanning of his bag and slippers, the presence of gold in lower items type was revealed hid in his slippers which he was sporting throughout journey. The slippers have been lower open and 4 lower items of gold completely weighing 1.2 kg having purity of 24 kt valued at Rs. 69.40 lakh was seized, stated a senior Customs official.
